Sturm’s commonsense approach to studying, performing, and teaching dance is an invaluable guide to expressing one’s creative gifts and finding one’s muse.

The teaching method of the Northern Virginia Dance Academy is that of the legendary ballet teacher Mary Day, who was the co-founder and director of the Washington School of the Ballet and the Washington Ballet. The teaching technique and syllabus are modeled after the Russian style, but with particular attention paid to the safe placement of knees and hips. We stress artistic quality combined with precise and articulate use of the feet and legs with an elegantly expressive, fluid flow of the arms and upper body. Ms. Sturm is a “Mary Day trained” dancer who is dedicated to passing on this timeless, versatile and strong technique, and maintaining the legacy of this famous classical style of dance.
